Inbox Marketer has recently published our annual 2017 North American benchmark report:

Every year Inbox Marketer tracks metrics, momentum and highlights on the major industry trends in email marketing. By analyzing our proprietary data from across a variety of industry sectors of North American B2C & B2B clients, we are able to gather marketing insights and learn what factors are influencing customer behaviour. 

There are many components of email for marketers to master. This insider view of email shows that with a disciplined approach and constant “kaizen” diligence, marketers can increase all their key campaign metrics. Great email marketing is 30% art and 70% science. Focusing on what matters most leads to significant improvements. 

2016 saw substantial growth in both volume and frequency. A June 2016 survey of US marketers conducted by the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) and Demand Metric found that email has a median Return on Ad Spending of 122%—more than four times higher than any other marketing channel examined, including paid search, social media, or social ads.
